Traditional and most popular festivities in the Canary Islands

Agaete La Rama (Branch) Festival

One of the most popular festivities in Gran Canaria. It takes place in the Municipality of Agaete every 4th of August where thousands of people dance to the sound of traditional music through the streets of Agaete, with a branch in hand and making the walk to where the Virgin is housed. The festival hosts a weekend full of cultural events, pilgrimages to dance and have fun, as well as the offerings to the Virgin. It is one of the most eagerly awaited weekends by the people of Gran Canaria.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival

It is another of the most awaited events by the Canaries: the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. All visitors come in search of endless fun and colour, which is surpassed every year by the massive number of people who come to enjoy the Carnival.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival

One of the most famous carnivals in the world is in the Canary Islands and takes place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During 3 weeks in February or March, the streets are filled with color, music and dance to the rhythm of comparsas. Celebrities from Spain and around the world are invited to participate, this is one of the reasons why this Carnival is so prestigious.

Virgen del Pino festivities

The town of Teror is an enclave of worship and pilgrimage for many religious who in these dates of celebration come to venerate Virgin del Pino, patron saint of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. The tradition tries to come walking from the rest of villages of Gran Canaria, fulfilling the promises to  Virgen del Pino that are done throughout the rest of the year.

Virgen de la Candelaria festivities 

The celebration around the other patron saints of the Canary Islands: Virgin of Candelaria in Tenerife. It is celebrated on August 15 and there is a specific program of adoration and offerings to the virgin, with recreational and cultural activities for the whole family.

Almond Blossom Fest

It is one of the most popular and oldest festivals in the Canary Islands (the first were in the 70s), held in the municipalities of Tejeda and Valsequillo in Gran Canaria, where a large crowd of residents from all the villages of the Canary Islands and many other curious visitors gather to celebrate the blossoming of the almond tree harvest.

The Indians of La Palma

A festivity that crosses borders, and that is celebrated during the Carnival. Although it is typical and indigenous to the island of La Palma, it is held in many municipalities of the Canary Islands. The peculiarity of its celebration, which consists of throwing talcum powder dressed in white to all the assistants to the sound of the music, turns it into one of the most special and different popular celebrations of Spain. This popular celebration has its history and it could not be more beautiful in this case: it celebrates the arrival of the emigrants who had to leave for America and those who were called "Indianos". 

The descent of the Virgen de los Nieves and the dance of the Dwarves in Santa Cruz de La Palma

The most eagerly awaited party by the palmeros, and it is held every 5 years! It lasts 1 month and is held between the months of July and August in which there are many activities for all families, the streets are filled with color and offerings are made to the Virgen de las Nieves. It is here where the famous "Dwarves of La Palma" appear, where they walk through the streets and dance to the sound of traditional polka and delighting the audience. Without a doubt, it is the most representative image of La Palma.
